VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There are a lot of wet toes from slush-hopping on street corners in downtown Vancouver, as we navigate this wintry weather, West Coast-style.

A lot of people people are walking forward, head down, huddled in their coats and hoods — on a mission to get where they’re going through the snow.

But not everyone. For one security guard, it’s not just his bright yellow coat that stands out on the cold grey street. It’s also his positively sunny disposition.

“I’m fine! This is California, compared to the rest of Canada. Believe me. We’re still in the tropics out here, people don’t realize.”

Though he was smiling, there were also some dark expressions as people hopped over slush and dodged the chunky, gritty splashes from passing buses.

“I’m coping with it. You gotta do what you gotta do,” one man said.

“It’s pretty to look at, but not to drive. I’m taking a bus from Steveston today.”

Delta School District not crediting petition for snow day

It’s a rare snow day for public schools in Delta, but the school district says it has nothing to do with an online petition.

More than 5,000 signatures have been collected at Change.org, calling for classes to be cancelled.

But Jen Hill, who speaks for the Delta School District, says students shouldn’t get too excited about trying this strategy in the future.

“Unfortunately, it’s not something that we’re going to be taking into consideration.”

Still, she’s impressed by the effort. “We often have a lot of enthusiastic, if you will, responses to snow days — or the lack of snow days — here in Delta.”

The creator of the online petition declared victory Tuesday morning, sharing a post that said: “We are the cause of Delta’s first snow day in 20 years.”
