NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Many people were surprised to wake up to snow covering their car, lawn and street and, well, frankly the entire region.
Another blast of wintry weather hit the Lower Mainland, which left many side streets icy and covered in a layer of snow. Crews were out during the night plowing the main routes.
On Saturday, Environment Canada had warned of the potential of snow on Sunday, adding low pressure is moving over the region and as it leaves a cold front will sweep in bringing with it a blast of Arctic Air.

Issues stemming from the bad weather wasn’t just confined to the roads — BC Hydro crews have been kept very busy.
At the height of the storm roughly 32,000 customers were without power on the South Coast, Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island due to snow, fallen branches and high winds.
“The hardest hit areas are the Fraser Valley, North Vancouver, the east coast of Vancouver Island — including Nanaimo and Campbell River. The outages began late [Saturday] night and in the early hours of this morning,” explains Tanya Fish with the utility.
She adds crews have been working throughout the night and will continue all day until power is restored. “We are seeing many downed power lines as a result of the heavy snow adding weight to trees and branches and then falling onto the power lines. Crews are working on making those repairs.”
Fish is pleading for people’s patience, adding it’s going to take a while to get things back to normal. “If you are seeing any downed power lines, we do remind anyone who comes across a downed or damaged power line to stay back at least 10 metres, which is the length of a city bus and to call 911.”
